The hip joint is a typical ‘ball and socket joint’ with a layer of cartilage for smooth movement.

When the quality of the hip joint gets degenerated due to Osteoarthritis or Degenerative Arthritis, the joint becomes stiff and painful.

The range of motion of the hip joint is lost, and the patient becomes disabled and dependent.

When orthopedic specialists need to treat late-stage degenerative hip disease, THR (Total Hip Replacement) is the only option.

In this surgery, surgeons replace the femoral head or “the ball” and the acetabulum or “the socket”.

Experts acclaim it as one of the most successful and popular surgeries in the niche of orthopedics. Other than providing a significant relief in pain, it brings back the physical ability and motion.

Preparation for the Surgery

Before deciding about the surgery, doctors evaluate the health condition to ensure that the patient is well enough to withstand the surgical process without any trouble. It is done by performing certain routine diagnostics.

If there is any instability in the health, then it has to be treated first.

Once the doctor is convinced with the overall health of the patient, the decision is taken for THR surgery.

Doctors explain the procedure, complexities, recovery time and precautions beforehand.

The recovery takes a few weeks, and there will be help and support needed for care and daily activities. The same has to be planned.

There is a possibility that the patient needs the blood transfusion during the operation or recovery. Doctors make necessary arrangements for it.

The Procedure, A Typical Scenario

The patient has to arrive one day before the surgery. 

The anesthesia specialist and the surgeon jot down the schedule and decide on the type of anesthesia, i.e., general or regional. 

In the earlier type, the patient is fully unconscious during the procedure. In the latter case, only the body from the waist to the toes is numbed and the patient is moderately sedated.

The hip joint is exposed and the ball is dislocated from the socket. After removing the head from the femur, the reams are taken away from the surface.

A prosthetic cup made from Polyurethane, and the metal head with the stem are secured into the femur. To fix it, bone cement or press fit is used.

The ball is placed in the cup. Th new hip is taken through the range of motion. It is to ensure the mobility and stability of the joint.

After closing the incisions, the patient is brought to the recovery room.

The Recovery

To get fully recovered, the patient is required to stay at least one week in the hospital.  On the next day of the surgery, the patient remains confined to the bed. 

Physiotherapy begins from the next day and within two to three days; the patient can walk with the walker or crutches.

The quickly the new hip heals; the earlier it is possible to get around and perform the daily chores.

Risks and Complications

Total Hip replacement surgery in Mumbai is performed by the experts with full precautions, but complications develop sometimes.

Infection and Deep Von Thrombosis are the most common problems. Pulmonary Embolism and bleeding are also seen in a few cases.
